Muradiye Entrance Unit
The subject of the competition was to design a multi-purpose entrance unit into 600-years old Muradiye Complex. Despite the size of required building size with 5 sqm, it was a challenge to add something new into this 600-years old inheritance.
The annex proposed to the complex is simply a concrete cube deformed. First, one surface of the concrete cube is shifted and becomes a wall. The wall divides the road in two and creates a “service space” between itself and the cube. It includes shelves exhibiting books and flyers on its inner side where information and selling activities take place. Secondly, the rest of the cube is torn at several points towards inside, in order to develop several functions such as; information desk, seats and closet. The final figure is one frozen moment of that transforming cube. Even though the aim is a morphologically dynamic effect, the concrete as the chosen material is an effort to be joining the hundreds of years of existence of the complex.
This entry won honourable mention prize. I also had the chance to compete against professional architects when I was a student.
